What is the experience of everyday life in our technologically driven city today? Mass Observation 2.0: Research into the Everyday is a collaborative, transdisciplinary seminar between Parsons, The New School, School of Art, Media and Technology, New York and the Institute for Art and Art Theory / Intermedia, University of Cologne. This course will research everyday life with a critical and experimental, online and offline approach, in order to understand “the everyday” as a phenomenon that continuously shapes our perception of the world.

Based on the studies of the historical social research organization Mass Observation, founded in 1937, which were conducted by British anthropologists, artists, social scientists and psychologists to respond to the fact that the everyday life of “common people“ was not represented in the media nor in the political system of Great Britain at this time, the goal of this course is to question how everyday life is perceived today, in a globalized world, where the requirements of social media to perform oneself seem ubiquitous, and the demands of technology affect our sensibilities on an everyday level.

Our research strategies will include a variety of observational techniques, creating and performing instructions devised by students as methods for defamiliarizing and interrupting habitual responses to the everyday, as well as artistic research projects developed over the course of the semester that critically reflect on an aspect of everyday life. This course will culminate in a two part collaborative
student-led symposium (TWIN 2) in New York (December 11 – 18, 2016) and Cologne (February 2017).

Für die Anmeldung zur Teilnahme müssen Sie sich in KLIPS 2.0 als Studierende*r identifizieren.
Anmerkung: Die Veranstaltungen Mass Observation (TWIN 1) und Mass Observation (TWIN 2) finden in englischer Sprache statt und sind als „Doppelpack“ konzipiert. Die Seminarplätze werden nicht über Klips vergeben. Eine individuelle Anmeldung per Mail an k.nimmerfall@uni-koeln.de ist erforderlich. Zusätzlich registrieren Sie sich für die Veranstaltung bei Klips – die Zulassungen werden in den ersten Semesterwochen synchronisiert.

Info für Studierende der Kunstgeschichte: Das Seminar kann nur als aktive Teilnahme mit 3 CPs angerechnet werden –– ein Leistungsnachweis in Form einer Hausarbeit und Referat ist leider nicht möglich.
