Angaben zur Abhaltung
Gentle and Brutal intervention,
a movement seminar and a visit to PACT Zollverain

In this seminar, we will investigate the performance and presence of bodies in public spaces.
how strongly do norms shape the way we move in public space? How do gender, race, skin color and religion affect our everyday physical public performances? How do we negotiate space in crowded rooms? How our posture and the volume of our voice changes from one room to another? Last but not least, Is the contemporary stage considered to be a public or a private space for the artist?

Realization
+First part- Field research
We will visit crowded streets, shops, and public transport in Cologne. We will observe imitate and listen to the movement of individuals amongst the crowd. Try to decode their dominations, comfort, discomfort, and norms that shape strongly the way we move in public spaces. We will write down, discuss and list our impressions. We will also discuss our comfort- or discomfort in public spaces.

+Second part- visiting performances of contemporary dance in PACT Zollverein.
While questioning everyday street life in relation to physical performance, we will be seeing the work of two prominent artists; Boris Charmatz and Eva Meyer Keller. The choreographer Boris Charmatz, educated as a dancer himself, is negotiating on the rhythm and counting of artistic dance performances. His choreographies could be described as landscapes of movement. The work of Eva Meyer-Keller is strongly influenced by everyday-live-objects that become protagonists in her medial performance settings. The arrangement of bodies and movements on stage by Charmatz and the staging of daily material by Eva Meyer-Keller will rise up questions for us on public and private relations.

+ Third part- creation
Towards the end of the seminar, we will bring the experiences we collected in public spaces back to the classroom/studio. We will engage in an improvisation session, using the movement we collected in the streets. Towards the end of the process, we will stage a short choreography, using the pictures, voices, and interactions we collected in our field research and inspiration we gain by watching the performances.
