Sensing the Anthropocene:Performance Research and Embodied Knowledges
There is no longer any question that we are living in compromised times, within which the fantasy of an uncompromised self is isolationist, privileged, and dangerous (Natalie Loveless, How to Make Art at the End of the World: A Manifesto for Research-Creation, 2019). What we call the present is per se in a state of decay between past and future and can hardly be contoured as a moment at all. This vulnerability of the present is all the more evident in crisis situations. Between lockdown and an idea of normality, neither the past nor the future is really tangible. On the contrary: here, the present represents a seemingly endless exception in which unprecedented things can be experienced in a radical way. In this situation, how can the rapid efforts to make repairs and the striving for restoration, which merely lead to an inventory of the inventory, be averted?
Dr. Natalie S. Loveless is an artist and academic located at the University of Alberta’s Department of Art and Design, where she teaches in the History of Art, Design and Visual Culture, directs the Research-Creation and Social Justice CoLABoratory, and co-leads the Faculty’s Signature Area in Research-Creation. Dr. Loveless teaches contemporary art and theory with a focus on feminist art, performance art, conceptual art, activist art and art-as-social-practice. Her recent books, How to Make Art at the End of the World: A Manifesto for Research-Creation and Knowings and Knots: Methodologies and Ecologies in Research-Creation examine debates surrounding research-creation and its institutionalization, paying particular attention to what it means – and why it matters – to make and teach art research-creationally in the North American university today. // Die Veranstaltung ist Teil der Seminarreihe + Symposium Critical Futures - Possible Procedures. Unter diesem Titel widmen sich fünf Seminare vertiefend dem Semesterthema [http://kunst.uni-koeln.de/blog/semesterthema-sose-2021/]. Die Veranstaltungen befragen Narrative des Zusammenbruchs, thematisieren drängende Fragen des Anthropozäns, untersuchen spekulative Technologien der Heilung (etwa aus dem Schamanismus oder der Esoterik) und verhandeln Strategien für eine bessere Welt. Die Ergebnisse und entstandenen Materialien werden im Rahmen eines gemeinsamen Online-Symposiums am 25./26.06.2021 zusammengetragen und diskutiert. // |
