Angaben zur Abhaltung
This course will trace the emergence of a powerful Indigenous theatre in Australia from the 1960s to the present. Informed by performance traditions in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, contemporary Indigenous theatre productions present a complex integration of different narratives and cross-arts dialogues between ceremonies, European theatre forms, individual and collective histories, frequently telling the hidden stories of Indigenous dispossession and the aftermath of colonial settlement.
By referring to works by Indigenous Australian playwrights like Kevin Gilbert, Jack Davis, Jimmy Chi, Richard Frankland, Tracy Moffatt, Wesley Enoch and many others, as well as performances by Indigenous Dance Companies such as Bangarra and Marrugeku, this course offers an introduction to theories of post-colonialism and performance studies. By exposing the diversity and richness of contemporary Aboriginal Australian drama we will debate aspects of identity, nation, history-writing, and gender relations.

This course is designed to practice oral and written academic skills. Students will learn how to read literary and cultural texts in their respective historical, cultural, and genre context. Students will learn how to perform close readings of dramatic texts and filmed material, practice how to work with secondary sources, how to analyze primary materials by using critical and theoretical concepts, and, finally, in preparation for the written end-of-module exams, how to come up with an interesting argument and thesis statement of your own.
