A collaboration of the Labor für Kunst und Forschung, University of Cologne and Simon Fraser University, School for the Contemporary Arts, Vancouver. Hosted by feldfünf, Berlin.

Close on the heels of the ‘memory boom’ of the 20th century, contemporary processes of formal and informal remembrance and commemoration are still the focus of much academic and artistic work. They continue to be key in investigating how the past is shaped both by present-day needs and anticipations of the future. Against the backdrop of this present historical moment—with statues toppled, streets renamed and massive protests and the discussion about structural racism and discrimination reaching not only the streets but also mainstream media—Field School: Berlin will take a step back and, together with invited guests, pay close attention: What functional sites of formal and informal commemoration have emerged? How do visual artists and academic researchers explore memory and challenge historical representations both as a theoretical question and different cultural, social and political preoccupation? What is the impact of media on such activities? How might such attempts to deal with the past serve to solidify history but also destabilize it and open it up to new debates? Last but not least: what is the difference between history and memory?
Departing from Berlin’s urban historiography and mediated memories, Field School: Berlin will provide a framework for workshops, lectures, and process-based artistic research experiments that reflect on memory and history through a feminist, queer and decolonial approach, addressing present legacies of marginalization, discrimination, racism, colonialism and the ethnographic tradition as well as the complex relationship between nationhood and cultural identity.

Für die Anmeldung zur Teilnahme müssen Sie sich in KLIPS 2.0 als Studierende*r identifizieren.
Anmerkung: Die Veranstaltungen TWIN 1 und TWIN 2 müssen im „Doppelpack“ belegt und besucht werden. Eine individuelle Anmeldung mit Angaben zum Studiengang, Fachsemester und zwei bis drei Sätzen zur Motivation per Mail an Maximiliane Baumgartner mbaumga9@uni-koeln.de ist erforderlich. Zusätzlich registrieren Sie sich für beide Veranstaltungen bei Klips – die Zulassungen werden manuell vorgenommen. Wir werden uns dann Anfang März bei Ihnen bezüglich der Platzvergabe zurückmelden. Nach erfolgreicher Teilnahme werden 6 Creditpoints verbucht.
